  • Dr. Prithika Chary completed her MBBS in 1971, her MD in 1974 and DM Neurology in 1978. She has always been drawn to disorders of the brain and to neurological disorders in children and young adults. She acquired a PhD in Aphasiology and Multilingual aphasia in 1981.
  • She has been in active clinical practice in Chennai since 1974 at her personal clinic, worked in Tamilnadu Government Service from 1975 to 1982 and joined Apollo hospital Chennai in 1983 where she worked till 2012 while continuing also to practice in her private clinic.
  • Around 1982 she felt frustrated that she could not help patients with several hitherto still poorly understood neurological disorders, and decided to subspecialize in Epilepsy. Her decision was based on the fact that epilepsy being a disorder common in young patients, also had considerable options for improving the patient and an opportunity to improve their quality of life and impact the psychosocial consequences of epilepsy.
  • With this in mind she underwent further specialized training at Cleveland Clinic, USA and attempted to bring epilepsy surgery as a treatment option to her patients. In 1986 she joined MCh neurosurgery and qualified in 1990 to bring this dream into reality.
  • She went for observership postings in Queen square London and for intensive epilepsy surgery training under Mr.C.E.Polkey at her own expense in 1993. At the Maudsley hospital, London she was exposed to Dr.C.D.Binnie, Dr.Alarcon, Dr.Sanders, Dr.RobertElwes and many others. She attended the epilepsy services in all its aspects and was inspired by what was possible to help people with epilepsy.
  • On her return, she decided to start EPICENTRE as a comprehensive centre for epilepsy care. She invested her personal limited savings, mortgaged her home to take a loan to start the first VideoEEG in South India in March 1994 and could start services from June 1994.
  • The centre was housed in an independent rental premises of 4500 square feet, with inhouse analog and digital videoEEG, visiting psychiatrist, paediatrician, dietitian, special educator, and physician. The centre soon became known for providing excellent, effective, economical and expert epilepsy care in Chennai with good outcome.
  • In 1997 Apollo hospital requested us to bring EPICENTTRE to Apollo Speciality hospital and we moved our entire unit and team there providing the same care till 2004. In 1998 we introduced epilepsy surgery at Apollo hospital in Chennai. We had several successes and to date our team of Dr.B.Chendilnathan and me have done over 100 patients of resective epilepsy surgery with excellent outcome.
