The brain is a dynamic organ constantly changing itself and adapting to the requirements of the individual.
For instance in the newborn and upto the age of 2 years the senses and motor skills develop to allow the child to understand the world through his/her senses. To enable independence and movement, the motor skills develop. This is called the Sensorimotor stage.
Right through from 5-7 years develops imagination, memory, ideas about past and future and the ability to understand things symbolically. The brain undergoes rapid development from conception to the age of 7 years with a storehouse of nerve cells, which differentiate to perform different actions, are organized into pathways and pruned to remove redundant connections so the pathway is smooth and uncluttered to do what it is meant to do. Between the ages of 7-11 years the child begins to understand his/her feelings, knows that everyone around him/her is not the same, and grasps the concept of me, mine versus them, theirs.
Beyond the age of 11 years, the second growth spurt occurs, and the adolescent brain undergoes a fundamental reorganization during which time there is an imbalance between the limbic system (the emotional brain and the reward system and a not fully mature prefrontal cortex ( the rational brain). This accounts for the often confusing erratic behaviour of the teenager, who takes risks for the sake of thrills and instant gratification.
The process actually goes on till the age of 25 years, but is mostly stable by about 20 years of age.
